Description
Carbenicillin is a third-generation analog of penicillin. Like penicillin, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by preventing peptidoglycan cross-linking and murein assembly. It shows greater efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria as compared to penicillin. It may be useful against some species of Pseudomonas and Serratia, but has not been generally used in mammalian cell cultures. However, plant cell culturists have found this to be a useful prophylactic agent against many organisms, such as Agrobacterium. Recommended concentration in cell culture is 100 mg/L.
