Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence has proven an elemental tool in biological research. Scientists have harnessed the power of a naturally-occurring bioluminescent reaction into reporter assays where a luciferase enzyme produces light upon the addition of a light-emitting substrate. Here, we have a superior collection of luciferin substrates for luciferase imaging in animal models and cell-based assays. In addition, we have developed the necessary resources to further facilitate your gene network and signaling pathway research including relaible luciferase assay protocols, guides and comprehensive handbooks for luciferin substrate use in vitro and in vivo.

Select Luciferin Products

GoldBio offers a wide range of luciferin substrates including Firefly D-Luciferin salts (Proven and Published®), ideal for luciferase imaging in mice, cell culture and ATP assays. We also offer Coelenterazine, which can be used in BRET (Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer), ELlSA, high-throughput screening assays and the chemiluminescent detection of superoxide anions and peroxynitrite in cells and tissues.

GoldBio also offers the highly sensitive single and dual Illumination™ Assay Kits that allow measurement of firefly and renilla activity in vitro with high sensitivity and linearity and come in both flash & glow-type formats for your different detection and emission duration needs. In addition, GoldBio’s Illumination™ Assay Kits are also available in lyophilized form for your convenience. Here, you will also find different luciferin assay lysis buffer options as well as various supporting reagents.

Discover Luciferin Resources

Our complete collection of luciferin resources contains detailed information to help you succesfully carry out your luciferase assay experiments. Our luciferase assay kit comparison guide and fact sheet offers information on our products to help you decide the best luciferase substrate for your system. In addition, we offer detailed protocols for each of our Illumination™ assay kits including our Firefly & Renilla Enhanced Assay. We also provide you with comprehensive in vitro and in vivo D Luciferin handbooks containg specific instructions for luciferase activity measurement and imaging in cell culture and animal models.

Luciferin Frequently Asked Questions

Does your Luciferin work in vivo?

YES! Many of our customers use our Luciferin in animals. Our Luciferin has been cited in over 2000 peer-reviewed journal articles. See below for an example of GoldBio Luciferin used in an in vivo luciferase mouse assay:

Is there a difference between Sodium and Potassium Luciferin?

We do not see an applicable difference between the sodium and potassium salts of Luciferin. There are small physical characteristic differences, such as sodium Luciferin is somewhat more granular and is more soluble than potassium Luciferin. From literature, potassium Luciferin is cited approximately 3 times more often than sodium Luciferin, and most researchers seem to prefer potassium Luciferin in vivo, but either Luciferin salt will work equally well.
